61Hoppets kapell

Whitagram Image 51

The Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog Parish wishes to expand the existing funeral chapel. This is due to a lack of space and a desire for additional facilities. Through this proposal, the parish primarily seeks to create a waiting room with an accessible restroom and a coat check area. The main function of the waiting room is to accommodate mourners, providing them with a place to gather and greet one another before a funeral ceremony. They also wish to reclaim the sacristy, which has currently been converted into a restroom. Currently, a number of pews have been removed and a temporary coatroom is being built into the existing chapel space; these pews can be reinstalled under the proposal. The parish also wishes for a suitable space for simple urn ceremonies following a funeral and cremation prior to burial, something that is currently unavailable. Through this proposal, we aim to restore the chapel to its original color scheme. This original color scheme divides the building into two parts: a darker volume that meets the ground and a lighter one that meets the sky. We believe this symbolism has been lost by painting the chapel in a uniform color. The entrance gable remains the same, though on a smaller scale. The five pointed windows are moved out to the new facade. The addition follows the shape of the existing chapel with a gabled roof but is proportionally smaller. The addition is larger than the choir but smaller than the existing chapel interior.
